Clare and Dean Bensley donated a conservation easement of 63 acres on Mountain Road in Newbury. The Bensley easement lies between Sunapee Ridge and Bald Sunapee Mountain. The easement portion, which is primarily within Newbury’s borders, is part of a 99-acre tract south of Mountain Road in Newbury and Bradford. The easement land contains a forest comprised of a hardwood stand, mixed wood, pine and a sugar bush. The trails are fully open to the public for walking, hiking, cross-country skiing, horseback riding and snowshoeing. Hunting is also allowed on the property. The land attracts much wildlife, including bear, fox, coyote and moose. There is also an abundance of wildflowers including lady’s slippers, bunchberry, princess pine and rattlesnake plantain.
The property provides significant wildlife habitat and is in close proximity to a much larger ecosystem/habitat area including several thousand acres of protected land, including Pillsbury State Park and Sunapee State Park.
David Bassi and Linda Brockmeier purchased this property in June 2008. In 2014, the property was transferred to David Bassi.
