Upon entering New London from the south end of Main Street you'll pass by one of the "gateways to the town." This open space meadows was protected in less than three months through a fundraising campaign organized by Ausbon Sargent. The view from the road across Main Street Meadow takes your gaze southwest to the overlapping foothills as they begin their march northward toward the White Mountains.
When neighbors realized the field had been staked out for house lots, they contacted Ausbon Sargent, whose staff and board members organized enough support to buy and protect this property. The neighbors themselves took the lead and pledged $70,000 and the remaining $30,000 was donated by Ausbon Sargent members and friends. Essentially, Ausbon Sargent protected the property by purchasing it and then selling it to the next landowners with deed restrictions to protect the open space and scenic and rural quality of the property. This property was recognized in the Town Master Plan in 1987 as especially deserving of preservation and now it is protected forever.
The current owners of the property are Deborah and Richard Cross, and they maintain the field for the panoramic view.
