Gary Clark

Gary Clark passed away peacefully at his Rowe Mountain Road home in Bradford on August 15, 2019 at the age of 71.  The Ausbon Sargent community got to know Gary when he placed a conservation easement through Ausbon Sargent on his 63-acre George Clark Woods property in Bradford on October 20, 2017.  Gary’s father, George, had purchased the property in 1958 as a wildlife and recreation haven for all to enjoy and Gary paid tribute to his father by protecting this land forever.

After graduating from Yale University and the Brattleboro School for International Training, Gary held a fascinating career as a translator, working for the United Nations and World Bank in Washington DC.  Gary later returned to the Bradford property in 1992 and lived for decades with his partner, David Holland, enjoying the land they all loved.  In an article that Gary wrote for the Ausbon Sargent Chatter newsletter, he said about the George Clark Woods, “Every piece of land holds its own wonders and is beautiful in its own right, but not every piece of land offers such diversity as this: streams and vernal pools, lowlands and highlands, wetlands and drylands, a mature mixed forest, all of it bounded and crisscrossed by magnificent stonewalls.” We thank Gary for honoring his father’s intentions for his rich and beautiful land.
